32 Anna and her husband Ivan Tyuterev lived in a flat in a newly constructed building very close to the factory where he worked. As a turner in a steam engine mechanical shop, Ivan, like many Sormovo workers, considered himself more cultured than those in smaller towns. Alexander learned much from him about the life of highly skilled workers, who dressed well and discussed new technology. On pay day, they received wages in exact change and did not have to break large bills at the tavern, as workers did in his hometown of Murom.

Religious mysticism provided an initial interpretive framework for the appeal of a revolutionary’s life. At the Kondratov factory, Shlyapnikov heard vague references to revolutionary literature, which the workers imagined as ‘special black books which were kept hidden and in which the truth was written, but in disguised form’. Older workers told the youth that for this ‘truth’ people perished, ground up alive in special mills. Consequently, young workers acquired a reverence for the mysterious ‘black books’ and were eager to have revealed the truth said to be in them.
