With more than 20 million prescriptions being written for this drug each year, warfarin is the twentieth most commonly prescribed drug in 36 Initial Treatment 1 0 0 Q & A A b o u t D E E P V E I N T H R O M BO S I S WARFARIN AND RAT POISON Although warfarin was used as a rodenticide for many years, it is no longer used in rat poison. Brodifacoum, which is currently used in some rat poisons, is a drug that affects blood clotting in a way similar to warfarin.

Each day was harder to face while I was still sick. I had to take antiseizure medication, which made me extremely tired. Even though the doctors finally found the clot and were beginning to treat it, I had a very hard time with all of this, both emotionally and mentally. It was very traumatic for me to go through all of this because I was only 27 years old and I had just given birth to our daughter. All I wanted to do was to be at home with my family and have everything be normal. It was very hard to understand why all this was happening—women give birth successfully every day and it is such a common thing, but my situation was different.

What are the risks of treatment with warfarin? Every year, 1 to 2 percent of people who take warfarin experience an episode of bleeding that is serious or life-threatening and requires transfusion or hospitalization. Half of these major bleeding episodes involve intestinal hemorrhage. 5 percent of people who take warfarin, bleeding occurs in the brain (intracranial hemorrhage). Bleeding in the brain can cause brain damage or death. The risk of bleeding is related to the level of anticoagulation: the higher the level of anticoagulation, the greater the risk of bleeding.
